While officially under Russian control, the Hetmanate continued to exist as an autonomous state in the Russian Empire until 1764, when Catherine the Great fully incorporated the territory into the Empire. The Cossack Hetmanate had thus become a victim to great power politics. The Cossack Hetmanate had no say in these negotiations, which meant that effectively, their asking the Russians to help in their conflict led to the end of their short-lived independence. This way, the river Dnepr that runs through the middle of modern-day Ukraine, became the natural border between the two countries. In 1667, Russia and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth signed the Treaty of Andrusovo, which granted Russia the territories of Left-Bank Ukraine (the eastern part of Ukraine) and which granted Poland-Lithuania the territories of Right-Bank Ukraine (the western part of Ukraine). The Russians started the construction of a military fort here, which ensured the presence of the Russian military in the city. When the Russo-Polish War started, re-settlers who ran away from the conflict founded Kharkov in 1654. Thus, in 1654, the Russians entered the conflict, effectively starting the Russo-Polish War that lasted until 1667. In this conflict, the leader of the Cossacks, Khmelnytsky, asked Russia for help, a request which the Tsardom very happily accepted. 1648 was thus the date when the Cossack Hetmmanate was born, which was basically a precursor to the modern Ukrainian state (very simply put). In 1648, the Khmelnytsky Uprising started, which effectively ended the Polish influence over the Cossacks who lived in what is nowadays central Ukraine. The founding of Kharkov has much to do with one of the most important moments in Ukrainian history. Like Odessa, in 2014, protests swept through the city, confronting its people with fundamental questions about their identity. Like Odessa, Kharkov is a mostly Russian-speaking city (which is why I call it Kharkov, and not Kharkiv). Situated in the east, about 36 kilometres from the Russian border, its location is interesting, to say the least.
